RODE TRAIN AS FAR AS IT
RAN, BOARDED HORSE

CHILTON--SPL--H. W. Flowers was the first postmaster in Chilton after the railroad's coming made daily mail a possibility.  He was born in Crystal Springs, Miss., in 1853.

He is the first old settler who admitted he rode a train as far as possible.  He traveled by rail as far as Fort Worth in 1874.  There he bought a horse and saddle and rode to Jackson County but he liked what he saw of Falls County as he rode through.  He taught school in Jackson County about two years, then in 1876, he came back to this section and opened a general merchantile store and also served as postmaster seven years.  In 1885 he married Miss Sallie Masters of Mastersville (later named Bruceville).  They moved to Chilton in 1886 where he opened a general store on the street which parallels the railroad.  He served as postmaster from 1891 to 1898.
